Advantages of Solvent Cleaning Over Aqueous Cleaning

This video provides a summary of the benefits of solvent based vapor degreasing/cleaning over Aqueous cleaning. Reliance Specialty Products can provide your company with test part cleaning to help with your decision. Visit www.Relspec.com or call 847.640-8923.

Aqueous Cleaning is water-based and involves using various cleaning methods (from dip tanks to hand-scrubbing, to large industrial equipment washers) to remove grease, dirt, and oil from parts and equipment. Aqueous Cleaning uses water with surfactants, detergents, emulsifiers, inhibitors, anti-foaming agents, PH buffers and many other additives to the water wash bath to removed contaminants from your parts. After cleaning, the metal parts need to be rinsed (in de-ionized water) and dried prior to being able to use the parts in the next manufacturing stage. This process is usually done via multiple "wash tanks." Overall, the process can be cumbersome and prone to having parts not cleaned properly due to water deposits and the detergents, etc. left on the part.

In general, aqueous cleaning can be:

1. Unreliable -- due to operator error, or water bath preparation mistakes
2. Ineffectual -- due to dirt, water & detergent deposits left on the part
3. Time consuming -- cycle times are usually 30 mins or longer due to extended rinse and drying times
4. Expensive -- large equipment outlay for wash, rinse and dry tanks
5. Foot-print greedy -- the equipment line takes up precious square footage
6. Destructive -- might rust metal since water and metal are not usually compatible.

Solvent based cleaning is usually done in a vapor degreaser unit using a non-flammable, azeotropic solvent. Vapor degreasers are a contained system that heat the solvent to boiling and the "vapor" takes the oil, grease or other contaminant from the metal part into solution removing the soil completely. Vapor degreasers also have the ability to do ultrasonic immersion to increase cleaning of complex geometries. Improvements in vapor degreasing equipment and vapor degreasing solvent technologies make vapor degreasing an efficient, economical solvent cleaning option.

For many manufacturing companies, solvent cleaning is a much more effective (from a comprehensive cleaning and time perspective), efficient (because it is fast), human-respectful (minimal interaction with solvents) and economical way to clean their metal parts.

In general, vapor degreasing solvent cleaning with AeroTron™ Solvent is

1. More Reliable -- due to simple maintenance of solvent bath (mixing and measuring is not required)
2. Very Effective -- comprehensive cleaning, even of complex geometries
3. Comprehensive -- able to achieve almost absolute cleanliness with virtually no residue
4. Efficient -- no rinsing or drying needed
5. Economical -- in reduced footprint, electrical consumption and maintenance.
Additionally, vapor degreasers automatically recycle and reuse the solvent, thus limiting fluid use per day - no water or mixing needed.
